Los Independent Spirit Awards son presentados por "Film Independent", una organización sin fines de lucro dedicada a las películas independientes como también a los directores de cine independiente. Se entregan cada año principalmente a las películas y actores, etc. protagonistas del cine independiente.

Fundados en 1984, los Independent Spirit Awards eran originalmente conocidos como los FINDIE ("Friends of Independents") Awards y presentados a los ganadores como pirámides de cristal acrílico financiados con muy bajo presupuesto, lo que representaba las películas independientes. En 1986, este evento fue renombrado como los Independent Spirit Awards en honor a las almas de los talentosos y tenaces, quienes proporcionaron creatividad a la industria del cine.
